The Story

The Housecarls, professional, highly trained warriors sworn by oath and iron, served as the personal bodyguards of chieftains, jarls, and kings. They were men equipped with the best armor of their age: maille that caught the frost, heavy round shields that held the line, and the formidable two‑handed Dane axe that could split shield and skull in a single swing.

Frost clung to their beards, ravens circled overhead, and the air tasted of ozone and coming battle.

At dawn, the sky split with cold blue light. A meteor screamed across the heavens, showering the field with iron and blood, its impact shaking the ash trees at the ridge. The Housecarls did not flinch. They tightened their grips on leather‑wrapped hilts, juniper crushed beneath their boots, cedar smoke rising from the dying embers of the night’s fire.
