Long before roads carved through the hills of Kentucky, there was Athiamiowee, the ancient path known to the Shawnee and Cherokee as The Warriors Path, or The Path of the Armed Ones. Stretching from Shawnee villages along the Ohio River to Cherokee settlements in the Southern Mountains, this well-traveled corridor carried hunters, traders, families, diplomats, and warriors through some of the wildest forests of the eastern woodlands.

One branch of this historic route winds through present-day Rowan County, Kentucky, connecting this blend not only to Native American history, but to the very landscape beneath our feet.

Part of the Native Americans of Kentucky Series, Athiamiowee captures the scent of an untouched forest trail at first light. The journey begins beneath a towering canopy of hardwoods, where cool morning air drifts through pine boughs and wild cedar. Beneath the trees, damp earth, moss-covered stones, and fallen leaves create a rich woodland floor softened by generations of footsteps. Wisps of smoke from distant campfires linger along the path as fresh mountain air rolls down from the high country.

This is not the scent of a destination.
