The Beast Was Never Outside.

The old sagas tell us the berserkers wore the skins of bears.

They were wrong.

The bear was never a garment.

It was a doorway.

Before the battle, warriors drank, chanted, and surrendered themselves to something older than fear. Something buried deep beneath civilization. Beneath reason. Beneath the thin shell of what makes a man feel safe.

When the war horns sounded, they crossed that threshold.

And the bear woke.

Berserkers opens with the dark sweetness of crushed black currant tangled with wild bog myrtle, growing from cold northern earth. The scent is fleeting, a final breath of humanity before the transformation begins.

Then the smoke arrives.

Sharp birch tar and cracked black pepper strike like sparks from a burning longhouse. Weathered aged leather rises from beneath, carrying the memory of shields, oars, and blood-soaked bear hides.

At its heart waits the beast.

A savage accord of cave bear musk and the metallic shadow of dried blood creates the sensation of raw power barely restrained. Not clean. Not civilized. Primitive.

Alive.

As the frenzy fades, the scent settles into ancient darkness. Rich labdanum, damp oakmoss, and glowing smoked amber linger like mist hanging over a silent battlefield after the dead have been counted.

The storm has passed.

The bear remains.

The Legend

They smelled him before they saw him.

Black currant crushed beneath heavy boots.

Bog myrtle rising from the cold marsh.

Then came the smoke.

Birch tar.

The scent of a village after the screaming had stopped.

He stood alone at the prow of the longship.

No mail covered his chest.

No helmet concealed his face.

Only scarred leather, weathered flesh, and the hide of a great bear draped across his shoulders.

Some claimed the berserkers wore bear skins to steal their strength.

Others knew better.

The skins were not worn.

They were invitations.

And when the battle horn sounded, he accepted.

"You do not wear the bear. You let it in."
